The Winnemucca Junior High School wrestling team was back on the mats last Saturday in Fernley for the second round of Tah-Neva tournaments.
The Warriors continue to show improvement, with eight champions between the seventh and eight-grade classes. Winnemucca took 36 grapplers to Fernley and 33 placed in the top three.
“The kids are getting better,” said coach John Brooks. “Eight champions in all.”
Julian Esquivel at 105 pounds, Adam Dossey (130) and Anthony Peterson finished first in their classes at the eighth-grade level.
Kole Mattson (175) and Exavier Ceballos (heavyweight) earned runner-up finishes and Jadon Fetty (80) Caden Ricci (110), Colton Von Aspern (115) and Anthony Gildone were third.
Hunter Mullins (100) and Lance Dove (115) each finished fourth.
The seventh grade team had five champions. Coda Nichols (70), Kaiden Boyles (85), Isaiah VanKuiken (115), Roan Hornbarger (120) and Isaiah Huus (150) were all champions. Hornbarger is a fifth-grader at French Ford and Nichols is in the sixth grade.
Damon Fetty (100), Avery Wirthlin (125) and Merril Terry (165) placed second and Christopher Gildone (75), Kaylub Prather (80), Brayden Casalez (80), Kristofer Logue (85), Angel Huerta (100), Jesse Hawkins (105), Meadow Braun (120) and Jeremiah Simmons (heavyweight) were third.
Yahir Avalos (70), Wade Mori (85), David Hunter (100), Chandler Leiter (105) and Logen Garrison (105) finished fourth.
Winnemucca is hosting a Tah-Neva regional qualifier today (Saturday) at 9 a.m.
The top four finishers in each weight class moves on to final tournament in Lovelock on Saturday, March 18.
They will compete with wrestlers that qualified in the other regional held in Gardnerville.
