Each month, the Lander County School District Board of Trustees recognizes a person or organization at their board meeting. At the Feb. 21 regular board meeting, the Battle Mountain High School Wrestling team was recognized for achieving its 17th state championship.
Coach Mitch Domagala has been a part of the wrestling team for 14 of those 17 titles, a fact pointed out by Mike Chopp, trustee. Chopp went on to say what a great role model Domagala was to the young men and women.
Superintendent Jim Squibb complemented the whole wrestling team for putting in the work and doing a phenomenal job. Squibb knows wrestling is not an easy sport — he has been a part of two of the 17 state titles.
Coach Domagala introduced the wrestlers to the board and noted the titles they held. Domagala said the wrestlers overcame any obstacle thrown at them. He said they improvised and did what was needed to be successful. He said if they could transfer that into life, they would be great citizens.
The wrestling team collected its fifth consecutive state championship on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
Earning the 17th overall state title put BMHS at the top, with the most state titles in Nevada history.
