Kid's Fishing Day a success

The 25th Annual Kid’s Fishing Day Event was held on Saturday, June 10, just north of Winnemucca at the Wilson Ranch; 150 kids signed up to fish this year.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) stocked the pond with rainbow trout prior to the event, insuring lots of smiling faces and fish caught throughout the day. Fishing began at 8:15 a.m. and within moments, many of the youngsters were reeling in fish.

The First Fish Contest began just as fast as the fishing began. Winners of the First Fish Contest were, Benjamin Bryant (5-7 years old), Allyssa Venzor (8-10), and Joshua Northrup (11-13).

The Casting Contest began at 9:30a.m. with kids lining up to cast a practice weight at a small pool. Winners of the Casting Contest were Ethan Alexander (5-7), Landin Evans (8-10) and Dallin Evans (11-13).

Throughout the day, prizes donated by organizations and local businesses were raffled off to the participants. The prizes included rod and reel combos, tackle boxes, camp chairs, and more.

The Biggest Fish Contest winners were announced just after noon and were Leo Masters (5-7), Annika Elms (8-10), and Nolo Lopez (11-13). The biggest fish ranged from 14 ½”-17 ¼”.

The grand prize, a new bicycle donated by the BLM, was raffled off toward the end of the event. It went to nine-year old Jayden Shanahan.

The event has had great community support with raffle prizes and other supplies being donated by the following businesses: Barrick-Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture Mining, Newmont Mining, Silver Standard-Marigold, Khoury’s Marketplace, Ridley’s, Echeverria’s, CB Brown’s True Value Hardware, Nevada Muleys, Nevada Chukar Foundation, Nevada Bighorns Unlimited-Midas, Western Nevada Supply, Walmart, Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Nevada Department of Wildlife.

NDOW gave special thanks to the Wilson Family for allowing this event to be held on their ranch property north of Winnemucca.
