Senior Recognition night is a Battle Mountain High School (BMHS) tradition. This June 5, Battle Mountain Senior Recognition Night was hosted by High School Principal Russ Klein, Dean of Students Sondra Torgerson and Student Counselor Johna Reeves. The evening is a time when high school faculty, community leaders and parents get the opportunity to recognize the senior class' accomplishments. The scholarships and awards announced ranged from $50 to $7,500 toward a college education from 37 donors.
The 2017 Class President Josseline Martin-Ortiz opened the event with her welcome speech. Klein, Torgerson and Reeves presented awards and recognitions. Students who excelled in music, athletics and academics were given their awards by Marine Corp. Staff Sergeant John Kreutzer. Kreutzer presented four awards to Connor Rochester for Music, Yulisa Vazquez and Sergio Diaz for athletics. Saul Miramontes was given the Scholar Marine Award.
Math and science awards were presented by science teacher Sheila Miller to students Elizabeth Clark for $750, Saul Miramontes for $500 and Skotti Torrence for $250. Kendra Allen of the Great Basin Elks Lodge presented the Most Valuable Student Award to Josseline Martin.

Students Scoti Dominguez, Alyssa Edgar, Davadali Chaves and McKenna Jones were the recipients of these scholarships.
Reeves presented the UNR Nevada Scholars as well as the Pennington scholarship. The three Nevada Scholars awards went to Alec Green, Josseline Martin and Skotti Torrence each valued at $2,500. Saul Miramontes received the Pennington Scholarship valued at $2,500 per semester.
County Commissioner Sean Bakker presented the Melissa Bakker Memorial Scholarship valued at $1,000 to two students, Truxton Price and McKenna Jones. The night concluded with Principal Klein’s presentation of the Valedictorian award. This year three students Tristen Carpenter, Josseline Martin and Skotti Torrence all tied for the honor, with a 4.0 grade point average each, while taking honors classes. Each received a $1,500 scholarship.
