Survivor Day at French Ford

French Ford Middle School (FFMS) students competed on June 7 in the school-wide Survivor Day event. The all-day competition was a year in the making.

Classrooms were divided into teams by color. The color teams competed in several different events including: tug-of-war, math scavenger hunt, jeopardy, hula hoop relay and hot shot. Fifth graders competed in the morning and sixth graders competed in the afternoon.

The winner for fifth grade this year was Team Orange, which beat out Team Silver by only three points. It was a very close game, but Orange pulled ahead during the last challenge of the day — the hot shot game. The sixth grader winners were on Team Dark Blue — Mrs. Donovan’s class. Team Orange, Mrs. Kuretich’s class, took second place.

Students invited their parents, siblings and friends to join them for the event. Guests were invited to participate, but each team was limited in the number of attendees that could assist in games like tug-of-war. At the end of the day, attendees were invited to join the kids for a barbecue lunch.

Prior to Survivor Day, classrooms earned “survivor points” by participating in challenges throughout the year, such as a food drive, box top collection and a pedometer challenge. Points were awarded to classes, rather than individuals. Winning classes kept their survivor points from each challenge. These points were added to the total points won on Survivor Day.

Hot shot is a basketball game. Lines are taped at varying distances from a basketball hoop and each shot a player takes is worth a different amount of points depending on how close they are to the hoop. Students are allowed one shot. They then must pass the ball to another player. The second player is not allowed to touch the ball until it is passed to them.
