A handful of athletes from Lowry High School traveled to Reno on Friday, May 26, to compete in the Northern Nevada Weightlifting Championships at Reno High School.
They competed with schools from Reno, Carson, Reed, McQueen, Spanish Springs, Hug, Wooster and Galena.
“This crew has worked their butts off,” said LHS coach and teacher Taua Cabatbat. It was the best showing we had since we started to go to this competition and I am very proud of these individuals. Individuals that did not medal but battled wwre Heath Hall (JV), GW Coleman and Jacob Frazier all put out a good showing as well.”
The Buckaroos’ Julia Laird was the overall pound-for-pound best lifter in the lower level girls division. She was first in the squat with 265 pounds, first in the bench press at 160 pounds and first in the power clean (165). Laird also took first for total weight lifted at 590 pounds.
Whitney Willey placed third overall the middleweight class. Willey placed first 1st in the squat at 260 pounds, first in the bench press at 125l pounds and first with most weight lifted in the middle weight class at 555 pounds.
Shelby Garrison (lower weight class) was third in the clean at 145 pounds and third in the bench press with 125 pounds.
Her younger sister, Rachel Garrison, finished second overall for the best lifter in the middleweight division. She placed third in the clean at 155 pounds and third in the bench press at 135 pounds.
Audrey Snow turned in a second-place finish in the clean at 150 pounds and was third in the for the best pound-for-pound lifter in the lower division.
Heather Hall placed second in the bench press with 140 pounds and was the overall pound-for-pound best lifter in the middle weight division.
Sierra Maestrejuan was second in the clean at 165 pounds, second in the squat at 225 pounds and thirds for most weight lifted in the middle weight class at 520. Victoria Tirado was second in the bench press at 135 pounds.
On the boys side, Bryan Terry (225-pound weight class) was the leader of the pack in the squat with 470 pounds and second in the cleans at 305 pounds.
James Richardson (185-pound weight division) placed third in the squat at 405 pounds, while Victor Rosas (185-pound weight division) was first in the clean at 275 pounds, third in the bench press (275) and was third overall as best lifter in the 185-pound division.
Raymond Orzech (125-pound, JV division) finished first in the clean at 205 pounds, first in the bench press at 185 pounds, first in the squat at 275 pounds and was the overall best lifter in the l25-pound weight class.
Ryan Johnson placed third in the bench press at 255 pounds and was second in the cleans at 225 pounds.
