It was a mixed bag of results for the Humboldt County Rodeo Club, who hosted the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals this past Memorial Day weekend at the Winnemucca Events Complex.
Julianne Montero is heading to the national finals in Gillette, Wyo., in July after finishing fourth in the final point standings in goat tying.
She entered the state finals as the leader and had a good first performance with a time of 8.470 seconds to place second.
However, she did not record a time in the second performance and finished the short go at 19.740 seconds. Bailey Fulmer had three strong runs to capture first place.
Montero finished fifth in the season-long standings in barrel racing with 124.50 points. She missed out on the national finals by .50 points.
Montero had time of 18.147 in the first performance and improved to 18.103 in the second go-around. She stopped the clock at 18.575 in the short go. Moapa’s Oakley Scronce had three runs in the top five to surpass Montero by just .50 points in the final standings.
Montero was 13th in the final breakaway standings. Her only successful run was in the short go with a time of 13.230.
Chris Gleason is headed back to the National Finals High School Rodeo after winning the bull riding competition for the year.
Gleason held on for the win, despite not having a qualified ride over the weekend. Fernley’s Cody Alexander jumped to second place overall, after holding for eight seconds for two performances. There were only four successful rides in the bull riding over the three days.
Steven Bosch is headed to Wyoming as well, in bareback riding. He finished second in the final points standings. Alamo’s Tyler Bundy won all three performances on his way to the overall title.
Quint Bell advanced to the national finals with a second-place finish in steer wrestling. Bell recorded a no-time in the first performance, but came back to win the second performance at 8.690. His good fortunes continued into the short go around, where he won with a time of 4.55.
Bell placed sixth in boys cutting with 113.50 points. He received no points in the first performance, but bounced back with 137 points in the second performance.
He scored 138 points in the short go-around. In addition, he was 10th in the tie-down roping, tying for second in the short go-around with a time of 11.960.
In his first year at the high school level, Cade Bell finished sixth in the final steer wrestling point standings.
He was second in the first performance of the state finals with a time of 10.770. Bell did not record a time in the other two performances.
Bell placed eighth in cutting with 63.50 points. He had three strong runs with 134, 136 and 134 points in each of the three performances. He was 16th in tie-down roping and did not record a time in either performance in Winnemucca. Bell also placed 13th in reined cow horse.
Bailey Reynolds took home the top spot in the rifle shoot, while Humboldt County teammate Marie Curtis was third. Gleason and Seth Duncan were ninth and 11th overall, respectively. Bosch was third in the trap shoot, Curtis was sixth and Duncan was 10th.
The Silver State International Rodeo takes place July 3-8 at the Winnemucca Events Complex. Those that finish fifth through 15th in the final points qualify.
The National High School Finals Rodeo is July 16-22 in Gillette, Wyo. The top four finishers in the point standings in each event advance.
