Members of the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team attended a summer camp hosted by the Northwest Basketball Camp in LaGrande, Ore. The summer camp ended successfully as the team won the consolation championship tournament.
Coaches Roger Wallock and Tyler Samuelson challenged the Longhorn basketball team to improve this off-season and felt the opportunity was available by attending the camp. The team performed well against several high schools from across five states.
“We finished the week 12-7 and won the consolation championship in the top league at camp against teams from Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Washington and California,” Wallock said.
NBC camps are an overnight event that consists of intensive basketball position and skill work in the mornings, then transition to officiated and competitive basketball games later in the afternoons. According to ther NBC camps website, they encourage an atmosphere where campers walk away better athletes and people.
The camp started on July 10 and ended July 14, where the high school boys won the consolation championship during the week.
Wallock understands camps like these can bring the team together and has attended summer camps every year since his hiring in 2005. Wallock has proven to be a winning coach with a record of 162-132 in 11 years of coaching the Longhorns.
Chris Figueroa, who was the team-leader in points last season, averaged just under 14 points a game. Going into his senior year, he has continued to build a bond with teammates at the camp.
The outlook for Longhorn basketball appears bright as fellow seniors Mason Fuller, Miles Piramide and Gabe Naveran work hard to improve for the upcoming season. Only time will tell if the Longhorns can advance past the regional tournament this year and compete for a state title.
