The Battle Mountain Longhorn wrestling team was able to defend its Northern 2A dual title for the 2017 season, posting a 6-0 record over the weekend in Battle Mountain.
With all seven northern league teams converging on the Battle Mountain gym, the Longhorns began the process of positioning themselves for the regional tournament next weekend in Lovelock. “We have been working hard all season long with a very demanding road schedule,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “It was nice to settle down in our own gym this weekend and wrestle in front of the home crowd.”
Donning new uniforms that were donated to the team by Pinion Exploration, courtesy of Ken and Lisa Legarza, the Longhorns put up some dominating numbers, scoring an average of 64 points per dual as they dispatched all six of the foes they faced.
“We wrestled well today,” Domagala said. “All of our kids won matches and that’s what it takes to be successful at this time of the season."
Battle Mountain was perfect against league foes, beating Carlin 65-9, Incline 78-3, Wells 74-6, Pershing County 48-26 and Yerington 41-37.
The Longhorns will take a number of seeded wrestlers to next weekend’s northern zone tournament.
Cameron Thompson, Jake Legarza, DeAndre Powell, Fabian Castaneda, Fernando Carrillo, Mason Chopp and Tristin Cordingley all secured top seeds for the Northern League Tournament.
Cesar Tovar and Zach Heese will enter as the second seed in their weight classes, while Daegan McClary, Ricardo Carrillo and Tyler Rochester will be third seeds.
Rounding out the rankings are Brandon Stallard in fourth and Thomas Amezcua with a fifth seed.
“We had a lot of success at the duals and positioned ourselves well for zone,” Domagala said. “Now, we have to continue to improve down the stretch.”
Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Saturday for the Northern 2A Regional Championship.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advances to the NIAA State Championships on Feb. 10-11 at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
