In the last tournament of the regular season the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to Fernley to participate in the annual Vaquero Classic.

“This is a great tournament,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “It gives us one final chance to go against the best 4A and 3A teams in northern Nevada before we begin the stretch run for the state tournament.”

The Longhorns wrestled tough over the two days and at the end finished in fifth place out of 29 teams with 144.50 points.

Reno claimed the team title with 263 points and Lowry was second at 171. Reed (160.50) placed third and Elko (148.50) was fourth.

“We tried some different positions with our lineup trying to see what some of the kids could do in different classes, as well as evaluating our younger kids against top competition,” added Domagala.

Leading the way for the Longhorns was Cameron Thompson as he pinned four opponents in an average of 54 seconds each and captured first place as well as the Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament award.

Jake Legarza and Zach Heese came home with bronze medals for their third-place finishes. Tristin Cordingley took fourth place, while DeAndre Powell ended the weekend in fifth.

Daegen McClary, Owen Oakes, Mason Chopp and Fernando Carrillo finished within one match of the podium.

Daimean Diaz, Brandon Stallard, Thomas Amezcua, Ricardo Carrillo and Tyler Rochester all won matches for the Longhorns. “These guys wrestled tough and looked good all weekend,” Domagala said. “They battled in all their matches and just needed a break here or there to get into the later rounds on Saturday. I expect some big things out of them in the coming weeks.”

This weekend the Longhorns host the Northern 2A Duals starting Friday at 1 p.m. in the BMHS gym. These duals will determine the seeding for the regional tournament.

Following the high school action the local gym continues being the hot spot of wrestling in northeastern Nevada as the Battle Mountain Wrestling Club hosts their annual USA wrestling tournament on Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
