One could not blame the Lowry High School girls basketball team for putting on a show in front of its home crowd.
The last time the Lady Bucks played a game in Winnemucca, was at the end of November to begin the season. After picking up a forfeit victory over Sparks on Jan. 6, Lowry had to wait until this past Friday to don their brand new white uniforms again.
The Lady Bucks took their frustrations out on Dayton, scoring the first 30 points of the night, en route to a 60-12 victory.
“The girls came out and played great tonight,” said LHS coach Chelsea Cabatbat. “We have been waiting a long time to get back on our home floor. The girls were ready to go and shot the ball well.”
Lowry raced out to a 10-0 advantage two minutes into the game, as Brooklyn Waller, Kenadee Jeppsen and Sydney Connors all scored on easy layups off the Lady Bucks’ full-court press. A 3-point shot by Waller forced the Dust Devils to take a timeout, two minutes into the contest.
Lowry continued to pick easy baskets off its defensive pressure and then netted back-to-back long-distance shots from Alyssa Kuskie, a 17-foot shot by Brooklyn Backus and a 3-pointer by Connors to push the lead to 26-0. Backus added another bucket and two free throws by Connors gave Lowry the 30-0 lead. Dayton prevented the shut out in the first period with a basket with 10 seconds to go.
Kepa Bengochea scored the first seven points of the second quarter, as Lowry extended the lead to 37-2 with six minutes to play in the second half. As part of the NIAA mercy rule, the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.
Dayton had one basket in the second quarter, but Lowry scored the final nine points of the first half, behind 3-point field goals from Waller and Kuskie.
The Lady Bucks outscored the Dust Devils 10-0 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 56-4. Tiana Herrera had four points in the quarter and Backus added a 3-point field goal.
Dayton knocked down two 3-point field goals to start the final eight minutes of play and surpass its total from the first three quarters.
Eight different players scored for the Lady Bucks, with Waller leading the way with 10 points. Kuskie netted nine points, seven assists and five steals and Connors also had nine points. Jeppsen eight, Backus and Bengochea seven each, Herrera four and Shelby Garrison and Hannah Hillyer three each.
