The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys basketball team picked up a pair of wins at home this past weekend.

The Longhorns collected a narrow 42-37 victory over Yerington on Friday and a 36-22 triumph over Silver Stage on Saturday.

In the win over Yerington, Alex Valles knocked down four 3-point field goals to finish with a team-high 15 points. Bradley Rogers added eight points.

“We pulled out a tough win against a good team,” said BMHS coach Tyler Samuelson. “It was about as ugly a win as you could have, but it’s still a win. We shot 11-of-31 free throws, and gave them a ton of offensive rebounds that kept the game much closer than it should have been. But, we made 6-of-our-last-11 free throws in the final minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Against Silver Stage, Rogers netted 14 points and Roberto Esparza had seven points

“We came out very flat in this game, and just didn’t have the intensity that we needed to play very well,” Samuelson said. “We missed a bunch of easy shots early that kept Silver Stage within striking distance. Defensively, we played great, held them to nine first half points, but offensively we really struggled. They packed into a zone, and we couldn’t make any of our outside shots to get them out of it. We were only up 22-19 going into the fourth quarter, but luckily our defense picked up, and fed our offense with some fast break points off turnovers. That helped us outscore Silver Stage 14-3 in the final period and come away with the win.”

Battle Mountain hosts North Tahoe on Friday at 4 p.m. and Incline on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
