Obituary: Burl Sandusky

Burl Sandusky passed away December 28, 2016 in Lovelock, Nevada. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle.

He is survived by his wife Roberta, and children Chuck (Sherri), John (Tracy), Brenda Mangaoang (Virgil), and Dave (Yuka). In addition three brothers; Vernon (Norma), Johnny (Ellen), Ronnie (Janet) and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews will miss his loving presence. A son Doug and sisters Donnabelle Neal and Rita Meeks preceded him in death.

In 1933 Burl was born in Earlham, Iowa to P.E. and Mildred (Cottle) Sandusky. After attending high school in Altamont, Kansas he worked as a mechanic and helped on the family farm before joining the Army in 1952. In 1955 he received his discharge.

Burl soon decided to further his education and attended Northwest Missouri State College. In 1959 he earned a degree in Education. After college Burl worked as a machinist in Coffeyville, Kansas while farming in Altamont.

While in Coffeyville, he met and married Roberta Frost. They moved to Altamont and lived there until he left farming to work for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. A layoff at Boeing convinced him to try teaching.

In 1962 Burl and his family moved to Lovelock, Nevada where he was employed by Pershing County School District as the Industrial Arts teacher. There he found the work he loved doing. He taught for 32 years before retiring.

After retiring he worked part time as an electricians helper. The part time work allowed time for travel, hiking, camping, biking and restoring a 1931 Model A Ford and spending more time with family and friends.

He enjoyed living in Nevada where there were hills to hike and climb. He continued to do so until shortly before his death. Burl leaves a void with family and friends which will never be filled.
