MCDERMITT — After nearly two weeks without a game, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team was back in action on Friday afternoon to take on Rimrock, Idaho.
The Lady Bulldogs, playing for just the second time at home this season, had little trouble with the Raiders in the 53-41 win. Even though the margin was just 12 points, Rimrock was never a threat to McDermitt.
“It was good to get back on the floor,” said MHS coach Jaimi Wilkinson. “It was a weird game. Rimrock really didn't do a lot on the floor. We had trouble at times running our regular offense. It was really quiet in the gym and not a lot of excitement.”
Senior Krissy Long opened the contest with the first five points of the game and fellow senior Megan Sam added a bucket to give McDermitt an early 7-3 advantage in the opening minutes of the first quarter.
The Raiders pulled within a basket, but the Lady Bulldogs pulled away late in the first quarter with six straight points behind baskets from Morissa Bitt, Precious Masters and Shania Lenoir.
McDermitt grew the gap to 10 points after the opening basket of the second quarter, but Rimrock was able to cut the gap in half. That was as close as the Raiders got, as the Lady Bulldogs answered with a 9-0 run to lead 27-13, which included a 3-pointer by Adrie Smart and baskets by Lenior and Masters.
Aided by three baskets by Masters and a 3-point field goal by Smart, McDermitt quickly took a double-digit lead in the third quarter. Dacey Horn gave the Lady Bulldogs its largest lead at 44-19 after her lone bucket of the day.
McDermitt played its younger players for most of the second half. Rimrock closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit under 20 points. The Lady Bulldogs were up by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter, before settling for the 12-point victory.
“It was good to get the younger girls some playing time on the floor,” Wilkinson. “We will need them to contribute later down the road.”
McDermitt (7-2) hosted Pyramid Lake on Tuesday night and results were not available at press time.
The Lady Bulldogs open Eastern 1A play on Friday with a 6 p.m. tip at Wells. McDermitt closes out the road trip on Saturday at Jackpot at 2:30 p.m.
