The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team collected its fifth consecutive state championship on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
The Longhorns also won their 17th overall state title, giving them the most in Nevada history. Battle Mountain was tied at 16 with Lowry High School coming into the tournament. Battle Mountain ran away with the team championship with 194 points. Pershing County was second at 154.50 and Yerington was a distant third with 80 points Tonopah (71) and White Pine (70) rounded out the top five in the team standings. Cameron Thompson at 113 pounds, Jake Legarza (120), DeAndre Powell (126), Mason Chopp (170) and Zach Heese (285) won individual titles for the Longhorns. Matt Rochester (132), Fernando Carrillo (160) and Tristin Cordingly (182) each placed second.
