Lowry boys end season with two road wins

The Lowry High School boys basketball team ended its season on a high note with two wins on the road. However, the Buckaroos will not be part of the postseason scene this weekend in Winnemucca.

Lowry ended with a 6-10 record in the Northern 3A, the same as Dayton. The two teams tied for sixth place, but the Dust Devils won the tiebreaker. Dayton beat Lowry in overtime just a couple weeks ago and upset Spring Creek last weekend. The Dust Devils' win over Spring Creek gave them the tiebreaker, since the Spartans were higher in the standings than Churchill County was. The win over the Greenwave was the highest win in the standings for the Buckaroos this year.

Lowry traveled to Sparks last Saturday and collected a 57-42 win over the Railroaders. The Buckaroos held a slim three-point lead after eight minutes of play and the gap remained about the same in the second and third quarters.

Lowry led Sparks 37-33 at the start of the fourth quarter, but outscored the Railroaders 20-9 in the final eight minutes of play.

Lowry had to wait a couple of more days to close out the year, as traveling to Truckee this year has been a challenge. The Buckaroos were scheduled to make the trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains on Friday, Feb. 10, but weather and poor weather conditions did not allow the Buckaroos to make the trip.

Despite more long waits in traffic on Tuesday, Lowry was able to play the contest and beat Truckee 55-48. Both squads traded the lead throughout the first three quarters, when Lowry finally pulled away in the final minutes.

Joe Taylor had 12 points for Lowry, while Jed Teichert added 11 and Brady Lange four.

Lowry, who finished 8-18 on the season, graduates three seniors in Teichert, Taylor and Lange.
