It took a couple of extra days, but the Lowry High School girls basketball team was finally able to close out the regular season in Truckee.
The original contest between the two schools was postponed twice during the year, including last weekend. Rain and mudslides prevented Lowry from making the trip last Friday into the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Heavy traffic and road work on Interstate 80 made for a longer trip than anticipated for the Lady Bucks on Tuesday. Lowry arrived 10 minutes before game time, quickly dressed and started playing.
"It was like the game was never meant to be played," said LHS coach Chelsea Cabatbat. "We just decided to get out there and play. We started off slow, but it was still a good win."
After a slow start in the first quarter, the Lady Bucks pulled away for a 54-15 win and ended the regular season at 14-2 in the Northern 3A and 22-3 overall.
It is also the fourth consecutive 20-win season for Lowry.
By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bucks built a double-digit lead and grew the advantage to more than 20 points at halftime. The game was played with a running clock for much of the fourth quarter.
Alyssa Kuskie knocked down four 3-point field goals and nearly outscored Truckee by herself with 14 points. All of her points were in the first half.
"We came into the game wanting to work on some things for the weekend," Cabatbat said. "We put some new things in at practice and this was a good chance to work on those things."
The starting five for Lowry saw little time on the floor in the second half, as Cabatbat substituted freely throughout the contest.
Seniors Brooklyn Waller and Aimee Brandon added six points in their final regular season game as a Buckaroo.
Lowry is hosting the Northern 3A Regional Championship. The Lady Bucks took on Elko on Friday afternoon and results were not available at press time.
If Lowry won the game, it plays at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Winnemucca Event Center.
The two finalists qualify for the NIAA 3A State Championships at Cox Pavilion on Feb. 24-25 on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
