The McDermitt High School girls basketball team will begin the defense of its regional championship as the No. 3 seed from the Eastern 1A.
McDermitt closed out its regular season this past Friday night with a 57-51 loss at Eureka. The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 6-4 in league play.

The contest went back-and-forth, with McDermitt jumping out the early advantage at 13-9 after eight minutes of play. The Vandals erased the deficit with a 12-8 spurt in the second quarter to tie the game at 21 at halftime.

In the opposite outcome of the boys contest, Eureka rallied in the fourth quarter with a 19-10 run to secure the second seed in the regional tournament.

McDermitt will take on Mineral County in the opening round of the Northern 1A Regional Championship at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Elko High School. It is a rematch of last year's regional opener.

If McDermitt wins, it will play the winner of Owyhee and Virginia City on Friday at 6:20 p.m.

The bottom half of the bracket includes Sierra Lutheran against Wells at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday and Eureka versus Smith Valley at 6:2o p.m. on Thursday.

The championship game is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Elko High School. The two finalists advance to the state tournament in Las Vegas on Feb. 24-25.
