The Lowry High School girls basketball team saw its weekend cut short once again, but picked up an easy win in its only contest on Saturday in Sparks.
The Lady Bucks knocked off the Railroaders 51-11 to improve to 13-2 in the Northern 3A and 21-3 overall. It was the first meeting of the season between the teams, after Sparks forfeited the first game of the year.
Lowry was scheduled to play at Truckee on Friday night, but the game was postponed due to poor weather and road conditions between Reno and Truckee. The two schools were set to play Tuesday afternoon to close out the regular season.
The Lady Bucks dominated from the start, outscoring the Railroaders 22-0 in the first quarter. The advantage grew to 37-4 at halftime and the game was played with a running clock from there.
Lowry continued to extend the margin in the third quarter with a 12-2 spurt to lead 49-6. The Railroaders did outscore the Lady Bucks 5-2 in the final eight minutes of play.
Eleven different players scored for Lowry and none reached double figures in the balanced scoring attack. Kepa Bengochea and Hannah Hillyer each had eight points to lead the way for the Lady Bucks.
Brooklyn Waller had seven points and Alyssa Kuskie added six on two 3-point field goals. Kuskie added six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Sydney Connors netted five points to go with six steals and five assists. Shelby Garrison and Tiana Herrera each had four points, Brooklyn Backus three and Hailey Hinkle, Aimee Brandon and Kendaee Jeppsen had two points apiece.
Lowry earned the No. 2 seed for the Northern 3A Regional Championships that gts underway Thursday at the Winnemucca Event Center.
The Lady Bucks have a first-round bye and will play at 3 p.m. on Friday against Elko, South Tahoe or Spring Creek. Lowry is seeing its fourth consecutive regional championship.
Churchill County is the top seed at 16-0. The Greenwave will play the winner of Fernley, Spring Creek or South Tahoe on Friday at 6:20 p.m.
The two finalists qualify for the NIAA 3A State Championships at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas on Feb.24-25.
The tournament is an NIAA event and Century Club cards will not work for free entry. The cost is $10 for adults. Students with validated ID $5 and senior citizens 62 and older are $3. Children 8 and younger are free.
