It was mixed bag of results for the Battle Mountain High School junior varsity boys this past weekend.

The Longhorns suffered a 65-26 loss to West Wendover on Friday afternoon. The Wolverines pulled away in the second and third quarters, but still decided to press Battle Mountain despite building a lead over 30 points.

DJ Martinez and Roy Chavira each had seven points for Battle Mountain.

“We did not play very well offensively in this game, and Wendover shot lights out, which is not a winning combination,” said BMHS coach Tyler Samuelson. “They started off in a zone, and we were shooting well against it, so they went man, and we couldn’t get going. The score doesn’t reflect how hard we worked, and how well we have been playing lately. Wendover wants to score 80 points every time they’re on the court, no matter how they get there, which is probably why they were running a full court press when they were already up 30 points. I talked to my team and made sure that they understand that sportsmanship comes before the scoreboard, and we were the better team in that aspect.”

Battle Mountain bounced back on its home floor on Saturday afternoon to beat White Pine 61-31. The Longhorns led 28-19 at halftime, but pulled away with a 15-2 spurt in the third quarter.

Bradley Rogers had a team-high 12 points, while Eddie Morfin and Chavira each scored 11 points.

“Offensively we played much better today. It was still a close game at halftime,” Samuelson said. “We pulled away in the third quarter. We were aggressive all day, driving hard to the basket and getting to the free throw line, where we shot 32 free throws. Overall, this was one of our better games, top to bottom.”

Battle Mountain ends its season on Friday at home against Pershing County at 4:30 p.m.
