The Lowry High School girls basketball team secured at least the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Northern 3A Regional Tournament in Winnemucca.
The Lady Bucks improved to 11-2 in league play and 19-3 overall after a 56-24 win over Dayton on Friday night and a 54-21 victory over South Tahoe on Saturday afternoon.
Lowry crushes Dayton
The first time Lowry and Dayton played, the Lady Bucks scored the first 30 points in Winnemucca, and there was a running clock two minutes into the second quarter.
It was a different story on Friday night, as Lowry managed just a 9-5 advantage after the first quarter of play. The Lady Bucks awoke from their slow start and outscored the Dust Devils 20-5 in the second quarter to lead 29-10 at halftime.
Lowry came out of the break just as hot, outscoring Dayton 17-6 in the third quarter to push the gap to 46-16. The Lady Bucks maintained their lead of 30 plus points in the fourth quarter to complete the season sweep of the Dust Devils.
Ten different ladies scored for the Lady Bucks, with Brooklyn Waller leading the way with 11 points. The senior added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Shelby Garrison joined her in double figures with 10 points, to go with a team-high eight rebounds.
Amaya Herrera had seven points and Brooklyn Backus and Hailey Hinkle each scored six. Tiana Herrera netted four points, Sydney Connors three and Kenadee Jeppsen, Alyssa Kuskie and Hannah Hillyer each had two points.
Hinkle and Kuskie grabbed six and five rebounds, respectively, while Kuskie had five assists and Connors four assists.
Lady Bucks rout Vikings
There was no slow start for Lowry on Saturday afternoon in South Tahoe. The Lady Bucks dominated from the beginning with a 15-6 run in the first quarter. Lowry outscored South Tahoe 18-2 in the second quarter to lead 33-8 at halftime.
The Vikings did not score in double figures in any quarter, as the Lady Bucks outscored the California team 21-13 in the second half.
Jeppsen paced Lowry with 14 points and seven rebounds. Connors also reached double figures with 13 points to go with seven assists and four steals. In all, 11 players scored for Lowry.
Backus added five points, Waller and Hillyer four each, Kepa Bengochea and Kuskie three apiece and Amaya Herrera, Tiana Herrera, Garrison and Hinkle had two points each. Kuskie added seven rebounds, six assists and five steals, while Tiana Herrera grabbed five rebounds and Waller and Jeppsen each had four steals.
The battle for the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the regional tournament was at stake on Tuesday night in Winnemucca. Lowry (11-2) took on Elko (10-3) with the winner clinching the second seed. Results were not available at press time.
Churchill County won the regular season championship at 16-0, while Fernley and South Tahoe are tied for fourth at 7-7. Spring Creek is sixth at 6-8. Those will be the top six teams that will advance to the regional tournament. Truckee, Dayton and Sparks has been eliminated.
Lowry closes out the regular season on the road this weekend. The Lady Bucks face Truckee on Friday at 6 p.m. and Sparks on Saturday at 1 p.m.
