The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team closed out the calendar year with a 39-36 win at Eureka on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The Lady Longhorns led from the first quarter on in the low-scoring game against the Eastern 1A school.
“We did not shoot the ball very well,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “We shot 17 for 55 from the field. We have a few things to work on on defense. We need to work on finishing easy shots.”
Battle Mountain held a slim three-point lead after eight minutes of play and slowly increased the margin in the second quarter. The Lady Longhorns outscored the Vandals 9-6 to lead 20-14 at halftime.
Eureka cut the deficit in half in the third quarter, but could not get any closer the rest of the way. Each squad scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, as Battle Mountain held off Eureka in the closing minutes.
Sruti Bhakta had 11 points and six assists for the Lady Longhorns, while Isabella DeAllah added eight points and four steals.
Paige Ripley and Grace Melver each scored six points, with Ripley contributing eight rebounds.
Drue Domagala added four points and Alexa Goddard and Sheradyn Slaybaugh each had two points. Slaybaugh, a junior, played for Eureka last year before transferring to Battle Mountain.
“The girls played hard,” Tremayne said. “We have had a good start to our season. We hope to continue improving and looking forward to our league schedule.”
Battle Mountain returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 5, to play West Wendover at 6 p.m. (MST) in Northern 2A action. The roads trip concludes on Saturday, Jan. 6, at White Pine in Ely at 2 p.m.
