Thompson named outstanding wrestler at Cody Louk Invitational

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was in Winnemucca this past weekend for the Cody Louk Invitational.

Cameron Thompson won the 113-pound weight class and was named the lower weight Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The Longhorns finished ninth as a team with 103 points. Spanish Springs won the team title with 288.50 points. Lowry (170) was second and Pershing County (130.5) placed third.

“This was a great tournament for us to see a lot of the teams in northern Nevada,” said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala. “The kids wrestled tough all weekend against some high quality competition.”

Thompson won all five of his matches by pin and only one match went past the second period. He pinned Tonopah’s Austin Leach in 27 seconds and reached the quarterfinals with a pin over Reed’s Nora Ochoa in 57 seconds.

Thompson’s longest match of the weekend was in the quarterfinals, where he pinned Elko’s Zethery Kinterknect with five seconds left in the second period. He won his final two matches over Spanish Springs wrestlers Keegan Cramer and Nickolas Foster.

Tristin Cordingley placed second at 195 pounds. After a first-round bye, Cordingley needed just 47 seconds to beat Lowry’s Dominic Hill to move into the semifinals. He moved into the final on the strength of a 1-4 decision over Carson’s Ty Evans. Cordingley lost to Reno’s Logan Hutcherson in the final.

Declan McClary (106) and Jose Guizar (126) each finished fourth.

McClary won his opening match by pin and needed a 5-4 overtime victory over Fernley’s Angel Guzman to reach the semifinals.

McClary dropped his semifinal match to Spanish Springs’ Devin Griffen but bounced back in the consolation semifinals to pin Spanish Springs’ B Gabriel Ortiz. McClary lost the third place match 5-0 to Carson’s Ariel Vega.

Guizar earned wins by pin over Lowry’s Lance Dove and Tonopah’s Dillan Otteson to reach the semifinals.

He lost in the semifinals to Spanish Springs’ Anthony Sissom but came back to beat Fernley’s AJ Kuha. Guizar came up short in the third-place match, losing an 8-6 decision to Reed’s Michael Mier.

Michael Malone (132) and Degan McClary each went 2-2 but did not place. Mason Chopp also earned a win at 182 pounds.1

BMHS beats Elko in dual

Battle Mountain hosted Elko in a dual meet on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and beat the Indians 53-27.

Bobby Kester, Fabian Castaneda, Kris Hall, Chopp, Cordingley, Declan McClary, Thompson, Guizar and DeAndre Powell won their matches.

In exhibition matches, Kohl Bellm and Malone won by pin.

“We showed up and wrestled real well tonight,” said Domagala. “Elko always brings tough kids and we’d lost the last 2 years to them, but tonight we were really focused and it showed on the mat.”

Battle Mountain is back on the road this weekend for the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno and the Mustang Invitational in Lovelock.
