Lady Bucks cruise to win in Northern 3A opener

After spending much of last week in Reno playing against larger schools, the Lowry High School girls basketball team made its home debut this past Tuesday night.

The Lady Bucks opened Northern 3A play against Dayton and had little trouble with the Dust Devils in a 67-21 victory.

“We didn’t play too bad,” said LHS coach Chelsea Cabatbat. “It was a good chance to get all the girls a lot of playing time. It was good for us to run through our offense like we did.”

After Dayton tied the game at 2-2, Sydney Connors started a 9-0 run with a 3-point shot and Lowry never looked back. Kepa Bengochea added a couple of lay-ups off steals and the Lady Bucks quickly built an 11-2 advantage.

Lowry scored the final 15 points of the first quarter, collecting baskets from Alyssa Kuskie, Brooke Hansen, Sierra Maestrejuan and Becca Kuskie.

Lowry continued the run with the first 15 points of the second quarter to complete a 30-0 spurt. Shelby Garrison’s 3-point play gave the Lady Bucks a 41-4 lead with 1:06 left in the first half. The contest was played with a running clock from that point on.

Dayton ended a 13-minute long scoreless streak after hitting a 3-point shot with 46 seconds left in the first half. Alyssa Kuskie made a 3-point shot at the first-half buzzer to give Lowry a 46-7 lead.

Garrison added six points in the third quarter as Lowry added on to its advantage and built a 55-15 lead. The Lady Bucks used their bench freely in the second half and outscored the Dust Devils 12-6 in the fourth quarter.

Eleven different players scored for Lowry, including three in double figures. Garrison led all scorers with 11 points and Bengochea and Alyssa Kuskie each had 10 points.

Rachel Garrison netted eight points, Hansen and Connors five each, Becca Kuskie, Julisa Garcia and Maestrejuan four each and Hailey Fernandez, Kyllie Sappington and Victoria Triado had two points apiece.

Lowry (4-1 overall, 1-0 Northern 3A) is back in action on Saturday to host South Tahoe at 1 p.m.
