BATTLE MOUNTAIN — The Lowry High School junior varsity football team started its season on a high note, with a 44-14 victory at Battle Mountain on Friday night.

The Buckaroos’ offense got off to a slow start in the first half, with a number of penalties stopping drives. Lowry grabbed an 8-0 lead in with 45 seconds left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Cole Jones.

The Buckaroos extended the advantage to 16-0 at halftime, when Chance Huitt combined with Taylor Corak on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 2:12 left in the first half.

Lowry kicked into high gear in the third quarter, scoring the first two times it had the ball after halftime to go in front 32-0. Jones added his second touchdown of the day, scoring from 10 yards out and Robert Schoenecker scored on a 17-yard run.

Battle Mountain prevented the shutout late in the third quarter when Cody Ostler broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 32-6. Lowry quickly answered with a 4-yard run by Huitt to extend the gap back to 32 points at 38-6 early in the fourth quarter.

The back-and-forth scoring continued, as Battle Mountain answered with a 53-yard pass play from Aldo Castellanos to Jordan Gonzalez to make the score 38-14.

The Buckaroos closed out the scoring late in the game on a 4-yard run by Schoenecker, his second of the game.

Lowry makes his home debut on Thursday against Churchill County at 5 p.m. Due to a lack of JV teams this year, teams will be playing on Thursday, while the freshmen move to Friday night.
