Despite school not starting yet, a handful of McDermitt and Lowry high school sports teams get their season underway this weekend.
The McDermitt football and volleyball teams will be home Friday. The Lady Bulldogs’ volleyball team takes on Rimrock, Idaho, at 4 p.m. and the football team kicks off their season at 1 p.m. against Rimrock as well.
The Lowry JV football team makes its way to Battle Mountain on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff in the non-conference match-up. The varsity contest starts at 7 p.m. at Tim Knight Field in Battle Mountain.
The Lady Buckaroo varsity volleyball team is in Yerington this weekend for the Yerington Invitational. Lowry will play two pool matches on Friday.
The tournament will be broken into a Gold and Silver bracket on Saturday. Among the other 3A teams competing are South Tahoe, Dayton, Elko and Spring Creek.
Moapa Valley and Virginia City drove up from the Southern 3A and 4A schools Spanish Springs, McQueen and Hug are competing.
There will also be handful of 1A and 2A schools.
The Lowry freshmen and JV volleyball teams are in Truckee on Saturday for a tournament.
The Lowry varsity soccer teams will be in Winnemucca this weekend for a two-day tournament. The Buckaroos are hosting a number of Northern 2A and 3A schools over the two days.
The Lowry JV soccer teams will make the trip to Spring Creek this weekend to get its season started.
The Lowry girls golf team will be at home Wednesday for an icebreaker tournament with Elko and Spring Creek.
The regular season begins on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. The league stays in eastern Nevada and plays in Spring Creek on Thursday, Sept. 7. The Buckaroos host their tournament on Thursday, Oct. 5.
The Lowry cross country team travels to Minden on Friday for the Douglas Class Races, which will features from all divisions in Nevada.
