Color the Mucc, the color run started several years ago as a cooperative venture between the Winnemucca Chamber of Commerce and Humboldt General Hospital, was bigger and better than ever this year! Winnemucca Chamber of Commerce President Alicia Cramer estimated between 350 and 400 participants laughed, walked and jogged their way around the 3k or 5k race courses and color stations before ending the color run at Vesco Park for “Party in the Park.”
The fun run doesn’t keep track of times and everyone who runs wins a great time and a smattering of eight different colors of non-toxic corn starch coloring powder. Those who turned out were in very high spirits and the day was perfect, with a bit of a cool breeze to make walking or running comfortable.
Chamber Manager Debbie Stone said 10 days before Color the Mucc, they had received 12 registrations. By the time the color run started, there were 320 people registered and all indications are, more joined in. Individuals registered for $25, children 6-12 for $15 and 0-5 free. Members of teams registered for $20 each. The proceeds from the color run go to a scholarship for a Lowry High School senior.
The original idea of a color run is to run past color stations where the “throwers” shower participants with a different color for each station. However, participants in Color the Mucc were already well into the spirit of things and throwing color all over each other and themselves at the starting point at the Winnemucca Community Garden before the run began Saturday morning, April 22.
Color stations were sponsored by different businesses and organizations, who purchased the color powder. Sponsors included Open Loop Energy, the Boys and Girls Club, Winnemucca Publishing, Mitchell Advanced Community Sports, Miller Law, Civil Air Patrol, Silver Standard-Marigold Mine and Winnemucca Stor All.
