Buckaroo boys finish third in Spring Creek

After missing out on qualifying for the NIAA State Championships for the past two years, the Lowry High School boys golf team is poised to reverse those fortunes in a month.

The Buckaroos finished third in Spring Creek this past Thursday, but kept themselves in a prime spot for the third and final state tournament berth.

Spring Creek won its own tournament with a score of 422, and Churchill County was second at 437. Lowry carded a 446 and Elko (464) and South Tahoe (470) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Truckee (484), Fernley (525) and Dayton (624) rounded out the team scores. Sparks did not have enough players for a team total.

Spring Creek’s Mason Adams was the low medalist at 76, while teammate Daniel Mahlke was second with a round of 77. Churchill County’s Kelvin Cann (82) and Raymond Plasse (83) were third and fourth, respectively, and Elko’s Cauy Mead was fifth at 84.

Sophomore Dillon Patterson led Lowry with an 85, while teammate Steven Bosch shot the best round of his year at 86. Zane Fifield was the third Buckaroo in the 80s as the junior finished with an 88.

Freshman Kobe Stoker shot 92 and Peyton Capellen had the final kept score at 95. Freshman Bodi Miller, playing in his second high school tournament, shot a 106. That was down 12 strokes from his score at Ruby View Golf Course the day before in Elko.

With two tournaments left in South Tahoe and Truckee, Spring Creek leads the league standing with 46 points and has clinched a spot in the state tournament.

Churchill County is second with 40 points and Lowry is third at 36. Elko (26) and Truckee (25) complete the top five. The first three teams in the final standings qualify for the state championships.

The NIAA 3A State Championships will be held May 15-16 at Spring Creek Golf Course.

Lowry is off this week and returns to the on Thursday, May 4, at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The Buckaroos can clinch a spot in the state tournament with a top three finish in the tournament.

Lowry then travels to Stateline on Friday, May 5, for a non-conference tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
