The Lowry High School boys golf team moved a step closer in solidifying a spot in the state tournament next month in Spring Creek with a second-place finish at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Wednesday.
The Buckaroos shot 445 to be in the runner-up spot, while Spring Creek distanced itself from the field with a 410. Churchill County was third at 452 and Elko (453) was fourth on its home course. Truckee (467) and South Tahoe (480) completed the team scores. Fernley, Sparks and Dayton did not have enough players for a team total.
Spring Creek’s Trevor Stannard was the low medalist on the day, with a 2-under par round of 70. Teammate Daniel Mahlke was second at 77. Lowry’s Zane Fifield shot his best round of his high school career at 80 and was third overall. Spring Creek’s Mason Adams (81) and Elko’s Cauy Mead (82) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Kobe Stoker fired his best round of his high school career as well, and finished with an 88 for the Buckaroos. Peyton Capellen was the third Lowry golfer to break 90 and finished with an 89.
Dillon Patterson shot a 92 and Steven Bosch 96 for the final kept scores. Freshman Bodi Miller played in his first high school tournament and shot 118.
In the battle for the state tournament, Spring Creek leads the league with 37 points, Churchill County is second at 32 and Lowry is third with 29 points. Truckee (21) and Elko (20) are third and fourth, respectively. The top three teams in the final regular season standings advance to the state tournament in Spring Creek on May 15-16.
Lowry finished up its eastern Nevada swing on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos are back on the course on Thursday, May 4, in South Tahoe to play Lake Tahoe Golf Course.
Lowry will be in Stateline and Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on Friday, May 5, for a non-conference tournament.
