The Battle Mountain High School softball team was busy last week with four games against two of the top teams in the Northern 2A.
The Lady Longhorns jumped on the bus to make the trip to Lovelock on Tuesday, March 28, to face Pershing County, the defending state champion. The Lady Mustangs claimed the 11-0 victory.
The contest was scoreless until the third inning when Pershing County scored a pair of runs. The Lady Mustangs added to their advantage in the fourth inning with three additional runs. Pershing County broke the contest open with six runs in the sixth inning.
Riane Schroeder, Alma Chavira, Yulisa Vazquez and Liscet Diaz each had a hit for the Lady Longhorns. Kira Smith started in the circle for Battle Mountain and suffered the loss. The freshman allowed 10 runs (three earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three batters and walked two.
Battle Mountain was back home this past weekend to take on White Pine. The Bobcats swept a doubleheader 18-2 and 7-2 on Friday and completed the sweep on Saturday with a 15-5 victory.
Marissa Rogers accounted for both of Battle Mountain’s runs in the opener on Friday afternoon. She had a solo home run and a doubled that knocked in Vazquez.
White Pine held a 2-1 lead after an inning of play, but scored nine runs in the second inning and did not look back. The Bobcats plated two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings and three more in the fifth.
The Lady Longhorns collected six hits, with Vazquez and Rogers earning two each. Jonni Davis and Smith had one hit apiece.
Smith and Jones shared the pitching duties, with Smith taking the loss.
It was the same 2-1 start in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, as White Pine slowly pulled away for the victory. The Bobcats extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning, before the Lady Longhorns scored once in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Rogers had two of Battle Mountain’s five hits including a triple. She had a RBI and scored a run. Davis, Vazquez and Diaz each had one hit.
Jones and Smith shared the pitching duties once again, with Jones being tagged with the loss. She allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits. She walked six and struck out three.
In the final game of the series, Battle Mountain closed the gap to 3-2 after two innings of play, only to see White Pine score 10 runs in the third inning.
Diaz was a perfect 3-for-3 in the finale with a RBI. Jenna Leavitt added a two-RBI double. Schroeder also had a hit and RBI.
Battle Mountain is back home this weekend to play Incline, beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday. They will play a single game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
