The Battle Mountain High School track and field team was in Elko this past Friday for the Elko Kiwanis Invitational.
Eddie Morfin led the Longhorns with a victory in the shot put with a toss of 39 feet, 3.5 inches. The junior was second in the discus with a throw of 115-1.
Freshman Cody Ostler posted a pair of runner-up outings in the long jump and triple jump. He leaped 36-3 in the triple jump and 17-4.50 in the long jump.
In addition, Ostler was fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 25.93 seconds.
DeAndre Powell finished fourth in the 400 meters at 58.0 and was 12th in the 200 meters with as time of 26.81. David Chavez posted a top-10 finish in the 200 meters, placing sixth with a time of 25.93, while freshman Michael Malone was eighth in the 800 meters at 2:31.
Thomas Amezcua (5:53) and Chavez (6:09) were 10th and 13th, respectively, in the 1,600 meters and Chavez was 14th in the shot put with a toss of 31-3.
On the girls side, Jade Smith placed second in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 58.5.
The junior also had a leap of 11-6 in the long jump. Aubrie Schmidt was seventh in the high jump, as she cleared 4-0 and Hania Amezcua was eighth in the pole vault at 6-0. Schmidt had a mark of 11-10 in the long jump and she ran the 100 meters in a time of 16.20.
Senior Samantha Broadway had throws of 56-4 in the discus and 23-3.50 in the shot put, while Mary Wolters had a toss of 23-10 in the shot put. In addition, Wolters was 16th in the 100-meter dash in a time of 14.80.
Adriene Burkhart had throws of 37-6.50 in the discus and 15-11 in the shot put and Kynndra Penson and Justine Jury had times of 16.22 and 16.30 in the 100 meters.
Battle Mountain is back in Elko on Saturday.
