Smoky Baird, lifelong resident of Lovelock, NV died on Saturday, March 25, 2017, after boldly battling cancer for the past two years. He was 79.
Smoky was born on May 5, 1937 to Jake and Louise Baird in South Carolina. He was an only child. He attended Pershing High School and went on to work in the mining industry and later was a business owner in Lovelock.
Smoky and his former spouse, Jeanie Garrett, welcomed sons Clay and Rocky into their family in 1962 and 1964, respectively.
He is survived by his son, Rocky Baird; his grandchild, Jake Baird (Keira); his great grandson, Odin Baird; and his stepchildren, Joanne (Coleman), Chris, John (Laura), Steve (Susie), and Maryanna (Jack). He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Clay, and his granddaughter, Lauren.
Terry Sullivan, his best friend and confidante of 70 years, knew him better than anyone.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Sam Anderson, his next door neighbor and dear friend, for being there for him throughout the years.
Smoky had an enduring passion for gold mining and his horses. He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing earlier in life. Treasure hunting was one of his favorite hobbies, and he spent many enjoyable hours metal detecting in Nevada’s mountains and deserts.
Smoky had an appreciation for life, and even attended Burning Man a couple of times. Smoky always had a story to tell. He will be remembered for his dry wit, wry sense of humor, and his passion for the outdoors. He will be missed.
