Battle Mountain High School volleyball had two Northern 2A matches this past weekend to celebrate Homecoming. Friday’s match was against West Wendover and Saturday’s against White Pine. The Lady Longhorns were able to split with a win against Wendover and a loss against White Pine.
BMHS sweeps Wolverines
Battle Mountain beat West Wendover in three sets 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22. The first set went back forth with the lead until 15 points when the Longhorns took control. At 20-17, McKenna Jones scored the last five service points.
Jonni Davis served eight straight service points in the second set making the score 14-5. Battle Mountain built the lead to 20-9, only to allow West Wendover to score five in a row. The third set stayed within two-four points the entire set.
Yulisa Vazquez had 22 assists, one kill, one block & one ace; Riane Schroeder added five kills and a dig and Jones had eight kills, eight digs, one ace & one block. Sammi Wilson had a team-high 14 digs to go with once ace, Liscet Diaz had 14 digs as well and one kill and Davis had no digs and one ace. Marissa Rogers contributed three kills; Isabella DeAllah had five kills, three blocks and two digs, Jade Smith had three kills and Grace Melver three digs.
Lady Longhorns fall short to Bobcats
After a long week of Homecoming activities the Lady Longhorns faced the No. 2 ranked team in the Northern 2A division, the White Pine Bobcats.
“We battled the first two games but fell apart the third game,” said BMHS coach Sondra Torgerson.
White Pine won 25-22, 25-17 and 25-14. In the second set, Jones scored six straight service points.
Vazquez finished with 12 assists, three aces and one dig, while Schroeder had five kills and one dig and Jones had five digs, four kills, two blocks and two aces.
Wilson had five digs, Diaz had two aces and four digs, Rogers three kills and DeAllah two digs one kill and one block.
Battle Mountain will be in Lovelock on Saturday to take on Pershing County. The JV play at noon and the varsity at 1 p.m. The Lady Longhorns travel to Eureka on Tuesday.
