Lady Longhorns split league matches with Silver Stage, Yerington

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team was busy last week with three matches.

The Lady Longhorns traveled to Wells on Tuesday, Sept. 13, for a non-league match and then played two league matches at home on Friday and Saturday against Silver Stage and Yerington. Battle Mountain stands at 2-2 in the Northern 2A.

BMHS falls to Wells

Battle Mountain lost to the Wells Leopards in three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-16.

“Wells has a very solid program, but we did not play our best,” said BMHS coach Sondra Torgerson. “Our offense did not show up.”

Yulisa Vazquez had seven assists, one dig, one kill, and one block, while Riane Schroeder had five kills and two blocks. McKenna Jones finished with six digs, one kill and one ace, Sammi Wilson had seven digs, Liscet Diaz had six digs and Jonni Davis two digs. Isabella DeAllah contributed two kills and four digs, Sarah Berumen had two kills and Grace Melver picked up two digs.

Lady Longhorns sweep Nighthawks

Battle Mountain cruised in Friday’s league game was against the Silver Stage Nighthawks, winning 25-16, 25-17 and 25-11.

“We were able to get the lead soon in each game and most importantly hang on to it,” Torgerson said. “It was nice to be able to get the non-starters some decent playing time, too.”

Wilson scored 10 straight points in the second set for the Lady Longhorns and Jones started off the third set with seven straight service.

Berumen ended with two kills, Hania Amezcua had two aces, Marissa Rogers five kills, Diaz two aces, Wilson two kills and one ace, Vazquez seven assists and one ace; and Schroeder had two blocks and one kill.

Yerington defeats Battle Mountain

On Saturday, the Lady Longhorns faced the Yerington Lions who have been the 2A state champions the past three years. Yerington claimed the win in three sets at 25-8; 25-16 and 25-19.

“We played very nervous and scared the first game, but I was proud of the girls for not rolling over and giving it away,” Torgerson said. “We played tough defense in the second and third game and gave the crowd some exciting, long volleys (rallies). I hope that they realize that they can compete with some of these teams that have been beating us the past few years.”

Vazquez had a team-high nine assists to go with one ace, Schroeder had two blocks and three kills and Jones had four kills and six digs. Wilson had 10 digs and one kill, Diaz four digs and one ace; Davis five digs, Rogers four digs and one kill; DeAllah had two kills and Jade Smith had one block and one kill.

The Longhorns host West Wendover on Friday at 5 p.m. and White Pine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
