The Battle Mountain High School volleyball teams made the long road trip to Lake Tahoe last weekend.
On Friday, Sept. 9, the Lady Longhorns faced the North Tahoe Lakers and both teams left the gym with victories. The JV won in two sets and the varsity won in four sets.
The varsity scores were 25-17, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-16. The first set was back and forth until both teams reached 14-14 and then the Lady Longhorns took control. In the second game the Longhorns lead by a bit the entire game and never gave up the lead.
The third set was back-and-forth the entire game and when it reached 24-24 the Longhorns misplayed both the next two serve receives, handing the game to the Lakers.
However, the Lady Longhorns turned it around and handled the fourth game from the start.
Yulisa Vazquez led the team with 26 assists, three aces, three digs, two kills and one block. Riane Schroeder had six kills and six blocks, McKenna Jones finished with 10 digs, three kills, one ace and one block and Sammi Wilson ended seven digs, two kills and two aces.
Liscet Diaz had nine digs, two kills and four aces. Jonni Davis had four digs and Marissa Rogers had three kills, one dig and one block. Isabella DeAllah knocked down two kills, two blocks and four digs, Sarah Berumen had seven kills and Jade Smith had two kills.
Last Saturday, the Lady Longhorns were at Incline High School to face the Highlanders. The JV lost their match in two sets.
The varsity squad dropped its match to Incline in four sets. The Highlanders captured the first two sets 25-21 and 25-20. Battle Mountain bounced back to win the third set 25-21, only to see the Highlanders control the fourth set at 25-11.
“We battled the first three games,” said BMHS coach Sondra Torgerson. “The fourth game found us on our heels and very hesitant to make a move. Nothing was clicking. We struggled with serve receive the entire match and when that happens we don’t have an affective offense.”
Vazquez had as team-high 17 assists to go with three kills and once ace.
Schroeder had seven kills and six blocks, Jones finished with seven blocks, three kills, and five digs and Wilson had three aces and seven digs. Diaz contributed five digs, Davis also had five digs, Rogers had one block and three kills, DeAllah had three kills, two blocks and four digs and Smith had two kills.
The Longhorns traveled to Wells on Tuesday and results were not available at press time.
Battle Mountain is home this weekend to play Silver Stage on Friday at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Yerington on Saturday at 11 a.m. and noon.
