The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team came away with a split of two road games to open the Northern 3A season last weekend.
The Lady Longhorns dominated Yerington on Friday and pulled away with a 6-1 win, putting a damper on the Lions’ Homecoming day. Battle Mountain peppered the goal with 25 shots, while holding Yerington to five on the day,
In her first year with the soccer team Sruti Bhakta picked up a hat trick with three goals. Abigail Okrzesik added two goals and Liliana Chavez had one.
“It was a good way to start out the weekend,” said BMHS coach David Marz.
Battle Mountain continued its road trip in Zephyr Cove on Saturday. The Warriors were the 2A state runner-up in 2015. Whittell came away with a 5-1 win as Battle Mountain dropped to 1-1 in league play and 4-3 overall.
“Whittell is tough and very talented, with long ball options to move the ball,” Marz said.
The coach noted the Lady Longhorns worked hard against the Whittell attack, playing tough defense against a relentless Warriors attack in the first half holding Whittell scoreless for 27 minutes in the first half.
The Warriors took 25 shots on goal in the first half and scored four times in the final 13 minutes to leads 4-0 at halftime.
Battle Mountain traveled to Spring Creek on Monday and results were not available at press time. The Lady Longhorns are back on the road this weekend to play White Pine on Friday at 3 p.m. and West Wendover on Saturday at 11 a.m.
