BMHS girls soccer team wins three in Ely

Lady Longhorns open league play this weekend

The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team hit the road last weekend for the Jason Nelson Memorial Soccer Invitational at White Pine High School in Ely

Nelson was a White Pine boys player who died in a car crash last fall the week before White Pine came to Battle Mountain for matches.

In its first game on Friday, Battle Mountain took on host White Pine. Before the match, both teams gathered in a small remembrance circle around the White Pine Bobcat within the center circle of the pitch to honor Nelson.

The Bobcats got off to a quick start, scoring four times in the first half. Lilian Chavez provided Battle Mountain with its loan goal to close the gap to 4-1 at halftime. White Pine added three more goals in the second half for the 7-1 victory.

Battle Mountain bounced back later on Friday and knocked off rival Pershing County 3-2. The Lady Longhorns scored all three goals in the opening half. Sruti Bhakta, who played volleyball last year, had two goals. Josseline Martin added one.

Mikayla Renfroe scored for Pershing County with a penalty kick in the first half of play. The Mustangs' Bailey Lovett scored in the second half, but Battle Mountain held on for the win.

The Lady Longhorns collected a 4-0 victory over the Spring Creek JV on Saturday morning. Bhakta recorded a hat trick with three goals and Abbie Okrzesik had a goal.

Battle Mountain opens league play in Yerington on Friday at 2 p.m. and Whittell on Saturday at 11 a.m.
