The Battle Mountain High School volleyball teams were back on the road this past weekend traveling to Wendover on Friday and Ely on Saturday. The varsity team ended up splitting with a victory against West Wendover Wolverines and a loss to White Pine Bobcats.
On Friday, Battle Mountain struggled but pulled out a win in five sets against West Wendover. The Lady Longhorns won 18-25, 25-12, 20-25, 25-18 and 15-12.
“We came out very flat in the first game, but after dominating during the second game I thought we handle the next two easily,” said BMHS coach Sondra Torgerson. “That definitely didn’t happen. We got behind in the third right at the start and tried to battle but never got the lead. We started out with the lead in the fourth and held onto it for the victory.”
Battle Mountain started out with the lead in the fifth, with Yulisa Vazquez serving three service points making the score 5-2. However, West Wendover closed the gap to 11-10 when the Lady Longhorns’ McKenna Jones served three points in a row giving Battle Mountain a 14 to 11 lead and the Lady Longhorns were able to finish off the match.
“This game was very important to keep us in the running for a spot at the regional tournament,” Torgerson said. “Now, we are set up to either take fourth place or tie with Lovelock. If we beat them this coming Thursday at home we will be in fourth pace and if we lose we will be tied.”
Yerington and White are first and second in the Northern 2A. The regional championship will be Saturday, Nov. 5, in Fernley.
Yulisa Vazquez had four kills, 19 assists, five digs and one ace and Riane Schroeder had seven kills. Jones added four blocks, four kills and seven digs, Sammi Wilson had two aces and 10 digs and Liscet Diaz contributed 15 digs. Jonni Davis had eight digs, Marissa Rogers three blocks, eight kills, one dig, Isabella DeAllah one block, one ace, three kills and eight digs and Sarah Berumen had two kills and one block.
On Saturday, the Lady Longhorns lost to the Bobcats in three sets 25-7, 25-22 and 25-13.
Vazquez had 11 assists and two digs, Jones had four kills, five digs, Diaz and Wilson each had six digs; Rogers had four kills and two digs.
