The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team had two home league matches this past weekend and came away with a split.
The Lady Longhorns took on Incline on Friday and North Tahoe on Saturday.
Friday’s match had plenty of action and saw the match go to five sets, before Incline notched the road win. BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson noted the Lady Longhorns lost their tenacity in the fifth game. Incline won 30-28, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-7.
The first set went back-and-forth, with the Highlanders prevailing in a set that went beyond its scheduled distance. In the second set, Yulisa Vazquez had seven straight service points, making the score 13-3 and the Lady Longhorns continued to push forward to pick up the win.
McKenna Jones started the third set serving and she put the first six points on the board and Battle Mountain was able to stay on top for the rest of the third set.
In the fourth set, Incline started out earning the first five points and Battle Mountain was never able to get the lead.
“Our wheels totally fell off during the fifth game,” Torgerson said. “I believe we got tired, doubted ourselves and were not playing as a team. We really wanted to pick up a victory against them to hopefully move ourselves into the third spot of the 2A Northern League.”
Vazquez had 20 assists, six aces, three kills and two digs and Riane Schroeder finished with 11 kills and five blocks. Jones added seven kills, five digs, one ace and one block, Sammi Wilson had seven digs and two kills
kills and Liscet Diaz had three digs and two aces. Jonni Davis had two digs. Marissa Rogers six kills, two digs and one block, Isabella Deallah had six kills, six digs and one block and Grace Melver added two digs.
On Saturday, both Longhorns teams took on the North Tahoe Lakers. The JV team, won in two sets and the varsity won in three 25-20, 25-23 and 25-13.
“We did not play our best or even our normal game, but we did pick up the win to improve our league record to 5-4,” Torgerson said.
Melver had two digs, Drue Domagala two assists, DeAllah five digs, two aces, one kill and one assist and Rogers had four kill and two blocks.
Davis finished with eight digs and one assist, Diaz had six digs and three aces, Wilson eight digs and one assist, Jones nine kills and four blocks, Schroeder five kills and Vazquez had 15 assists, one ace and four kills.
Battle Mountain heads to Lyon County this weekend to take on Silver Stage on Friday at 5 p.m. and Yerington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
