With less than two weeks to go before the NIAA 3A State Championships, the Lowry High School girls golf team was looking to carry some momentum into the future championships, as the Northern 3A stopped at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course last Thursday.

The last time the Lady Bucks were on the course in Dayton, they beat Elko for the first time this season.

Lowry could not make it two wins in a row, as Elko shot a 379 to beat Lowry (396) by 19 strokes. Spring Creek was a distant third at 437 and Truckee (480) and Fernley (482) rounded out the top five. South Tahoe (554) and Dayton (588) rounded out the scores.

“It was a day that we didn’t play some our best golf,” said LHS coach Todd Milton. “Unless something crazy happens, we are not catching them for the regional championship. I want the girls to have fun these last couple weeks and we will regroup for the state tournament.”

On a high note for the Lady Bucks, sophomore Tatyana Carlson shot a season-best 80 for low medalist honors. She had the best score by 10 strokes. Carlson leads the Northern 3A stroke average at 90.3. Elko’s Annika Criss was second at 90 and her teammates Ciara Peters (94) and Shalee Mullin (96) were third and fourth, respectively.

“That was a great round for Tatayna,” Milton said. “That is going to give her a lot of confidence to the end.”

Brooklyn Backus carded a 103 for the Lowry girls, while fellow senior Hannah Havens carded the best round of her career at 106. Elise Rose continued her comeback from surgery earlier in the year to shoot 107 and Savanna Cox shot an 112. Kaity Sample shot a 113 to round out the scores.

Going into the final regular season tournaments of the season, Elko, Lowry and Spring Creek have all but clinched spots for the state championships. Elko leads the league with 42 points, Lowry is second at 38 Spring Creek (31) is third.

The Northern 3A concluded with tournaments in Carson City on Monday and Fernley on Tuesday.

The NIAA 3A State Championships take place Monday and Tuesday at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
