Obituary: Oliver Hammersmark

Oliver Hammersmark, 88, of Battle Mountain Nev. passed away Nov. 21, 2016 in Salt Lake City Utah. Oliver was born in March of 1928 in Big Timber Montana to Erick and Anna (Mydland) Hammersmark.

He graduated high school in Big Timber and earned a bachelor of science in Agriculture at Montana State in Bozeman. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army in Japan.

In 1959 he married Gertrude E. Hammersmark of Minneapolis Minn., they lived in Billings Mont. and Prescott Ariz. before moving to Battle Mountain.

Oliver loved people and was fond of sharing stories with others. Many of the stories he had were of earlier ranching days in Montana. He liked traveling, and in his retirement he enjoyed eating and visiting with friends at the senior center, walking the cats and dogs and singing for his friends.

Oliver is survived by his daughter Michele Hammersmark, and his brothers and their wives, Stuart and Reva Hammersmark, Harold and Louise Hammersmark and Don Sandy Hammersmark, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 54 years Gertrude Hammersmark, sister Sara Haaland and brother Tom Hammersmark.

The family extends a special thanks to the medical staff at Battle Mountain Hospital, University of Utah Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Villa for their tender care.
