The Battle Mountain High School basketball and wrestling teams are in full swing this week.
The varsity boys and girls basketball team make the trip to central Nevada for the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne. The squads will play four-to-five, non-conference games over the three days.
The junior varsity basketball team make the short trip to Lovelock on Friday and Saturday for the Pershing County Tournament. The JV teams will make their home debut on Friday, Dec. 9, and Saturday, Dec, 10, at the Longhorn Invitational.
The varsity squads will head west from Dec. 8-10, to compete in the Comstock Classic in Virginia City, where both teams get a handful of games. The Lady Longhorns' varsity team makes their home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 13, against Wells at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Battle Mountain plays its first four league games (North Tahoe, Incline, West Wendover, White Pine) on the road. The Northern 2A home-opener is Tuesday, Jan. 10, against rival Pershing County. After three more road games, the schedule is kinder in the second half, with six straight home games. The Longhorns will be on its home floor for three weekends in a row.
The Northern 2A Regional Championship will be held in Winnemucca from Feb. 17-18. The NIAA 2A State Championship will be in Las Vegas from Feb. 24-25.
The Battle Mountain wrestling team will attempt to win its fifth consecutive state championship and 17th overall. A 17th title would be the most in Nevada history. Currently, Battle Mountain and Lowry have each won 16 state championships.
The Longhorns open their season this weekend at the Bucks Bags Invitational in Boise, Idaho. Battle Mountain travels to Elko on Tuesday for a dual and is in Winnemucca Dec. 9-10 for the Cody Louk Invitational.
Battle Mountain is in Reno Dec. 15-16 for the Reno Tournament of Champions, and they close out the calendar year by hosting the Longhorn Invitational on Thursday, Dec. 22.
As the new year begins, the Longhorns are back in Idaho for the Indian Invitational hosted by Buhl High School on Jan. 6-7.
The tournament schedule comes to a close at Spring Creek on Jan. 13-14 and the Vaquero Invitational in Fernley on Jan. 20-21.
Battle Mountain hosts the league duals on Jan. 27-28 and Pershing County High School is the site for the Northern 2A Regional Championship on Feb. 3-4.
