Winnemucca claims Battle Born Classic title

Members of the Winnemucca Youth Football League made their way to Elko last weekend for the inaugural Battle Born Classic.

There were two divisions — cruiserweight and heavyweight — and Winnemucca played Elko and Spring Creek in the cruiserweight division.

In its first game on Saturday, Nov. 12, Winnemucca shut out the Elko Wolf Pack 26-0. The Bucks came back later in the day to knock off Spring Creek Beast Mode 14-6.

Winnemucca and Spring Creek played each other again in the championship game on Sunday and the Bucks came out on top 24-0.

In the championship contest, Winnemucca grabbed a 6-0 lead on a touchdown pass from Logan Fettic to Braden Hammargren.

Later in the first half, passes by Fettic to Hammargren and Jordan Bills, set up a touchdown run by Skout Coleman to make the score 12-0. Coleman was named the tournament MVP.

The Bucks took an 18-0 advantage into halftime on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Fettic to Hammargren.

The final points of the contest came from Fettic, who scored on a 3-yard run in the second half.

Winnemucca was coached by Tony Gildone, Gary Coleman, Chris Hornbarger, Steve Nichols and Brad Bauman.

The Battle Born Classic will expand to a featherweight division next year and the tournament will run from Nov. 10-12.
