Lowry High School’s Will Kracaw and Becca Kuskie participated in the NIAA 3A State Championships this past Saturday at Craig Ranch Park in Las Vegas.

Kracaw, a sophomore, finished 13th with a time of 17 minutes, 12 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Kracaw was running in his first state meet.

“Will ran a personal and season record time,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “He now holds the fastest time for a boy at Lowry High in the 5K. His race was stressful with a false start called after they had gone clear down the straight and were on the first curve of the course. They had to re-group and try again. Will gave it all he had and we are pleased with his performance.”

Spring Creek claimed the team title with 38 points, while defending state champion Elko, was second at 68.

SECTA placed third with 81 points and Truckee (81) and Pahrump Valley (107) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Cheyenne (148) and Moapa Valley (182) rounded out the standings.

Pahrump Valley’s Bryce Odegard took home the individual crown in a time of 15:56. He was the only runner to break the 16-minute mark. Spring Creek’s William Fallini-Haas (16:11) and Cole Campbell (16:15) were second and third, respectively.

Dayton’s Jonathan Ply was fourth at 16:21 and Boulder City’s Tyler Campbell was fifth in a time of 16:32.

North Tahoe won the boys 1A/2A state championship with 46 points and Lake Mead Christian was second at 72. Sierra Lutheran’s Jared Marchegger won the individual title with a time of 16:23 and North Tahoe’s JC Schoonmaker was second at 16:27.

Spanish Springs ran away with the 4A title with 49 points and Green Valley was second at 88. Reed’s Anthony Ocegueda is the individual champion at 15:12 and Douglas’ John Munyan (15:36) was second.

On the girls side, Lowry’s Becca Kuskie was taking part in her second consecutive state championship. Kuskie placed 21st in the 3A race with a time of 21:18.

“Becca also had a great race,” Norcutt said. “She had to run in the heat which was interesting since it’s been cold here. The girls were fast and Truckee dominated with six seniors on their team. Becca gave it all she had also and we are pleased with her performance also. She had a great season and also set a new school record during the course of the season. These guys are young and this experience is going to be great for them in the future. I will be taking them both to southern California to compete in the Footlocker Regional XC race in December.”

Truckee’s Brenna Wapstra-Scott (19:07) claimed the individual title by 16 seconds. Spring Creek’s Rylie Lusk was second at 19:23. Truckee’s Claire Lang-Ree (19:25) and Isabella Terrarazas (19:31) were third and fourth, respectively. South Tahoe’s Carissa Buchholz was fifth at 19:35.

After being upset at last year’s state meet, Truckee won its third state championship in four years by the narrowest of margins. Truckee defeated Spring Creek 35-36.

South Tahoe finished third with 67 points and SECTA (104) and Desert Pines (144) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Boulder City (163) and Cheyenne (178) rounded out the team standings.

Reno collected the 4A title with 40 points, while Centennial was second at 54. Damonte Ranch (70), Palo Verde (92) and McQueen (105) were third, fourth and fifth.

North Tahoe’s Quinn Lehmkuhl was the individual winner at 19:44 and Incline’s Ursula Volz was second at 20:07.
