The conclusion of the fall sports season opens up new hopes for the winter season for Lowry and McDermitt High schools. The first official day for tryouts is Saturday, Nov. 12.
The Lowry boys basketball team will face a brutal December, starting with the season-opener at Reno on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m.
The Buckaroos will stay in Reno for the Wild West Shootout at Bishop Manogue High School from Dec. 1-3. Douglas, Folsom, Calif., Jesuit (Sacramento, Calif.), St. Mary’s (Stockton, Calif.), Servite (Anaheim, Calif.), Spanish Springs and host Manogue will take part in the three-day event.
The Buckaroos will play three Northern 3A contests on the road in December at Churchill County (Dec. 6), Fernley (Dec. 10) and Spring Creek (Dec.13).
Lowry’s lone home game before 2017, is against Reed on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m.
The Buckaroos close out their non-conference schedule with the Tri-State Holiday Invitational at Desert Oasis High School from Dec. 27-29.
Lowry will be in Pool A against Desert Oasis, Kingman, Ariz., and Sunrise Mountain.
The Lowry girls will be looking to win their fourth consecutive Northern 3A championship and fourth straight state tournament appearance. The Lady Bucks open with Pershing County on Tuesday, Nov. 29, against Pershing County at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Bucks hit the road from Dec. 1-3 at the High Sierra Winter Challenge in Reno and Sparks. Just like the boys, the Lowry girls play Churchill County, Fernley and Spring Creek on the road to start league play.
It will be a short Christmas break for the Lady Bucks, who travel to Reno for the Varsity Elite Tournament from Dec. 26-28.
The Northern 3A home-opener for both teams is Friday, Jan. 6 against Sparks. The Northern 3A Championships will be in Winnemucca this year from Feb. 16-18. The state tournament will be in Las Vegas.
The Lowry wrestling team has finished second at the state championships in the past two years. The Buckaroos open their season in Fallon on Friday, Dec. 2, and Saturday, Dec. 3. Lowry will be at home on Thursday, Dec. 8, for duals and Dec. 9-10 for the Cody Louk Invitational.
The Buckaroos will take part in tournaments in Lovelock, Battle Mountain, Reno, Nampa, Idaho, Spring Creek and Fernley. The league duals will take place in South Tahoe and the Northern 3A Regional Tournament will be in Elko on Feb. 3-4. The state championships are taking place at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks on Feb. 10-11.
The McDermitt girls basketball team will have a different look, after graduating a handful of players. The Lady Bulldogs reached the state championship finale in 2015, losing to Owyhee.
The Lady Bulldogs open with road games at Jordan Valley, Ore. (Nov. 30) and Pyramid Lake (Dec. 3). McDermitt makes its home debut on Tuesday, Dec. 6, against Crane, Ore.
Before the year is over, McDermitt will host Pyramid Lake (Dec. 13) and Rimrock, Idaho (Dec. 30). The Lady Bulldogs will also play in a tournament on Dec. 16-17.
The Eastern 1A schedule begins with road trips to Wells (Jan. 6) and Jackpot (Jan. 7). The Lady Bulldogs will be home to play Carlin (Jan. 13) and Owyhee (Jan. 14). The regular season concludes with a home game on Saturday, Feb. 10, against Eureka.
After just missing out on a playoff spot a season ago, the McDermitt boys will look to take the next step up in the standings.
The Bulldogs boys have the same schedule, but have an addition with Independence. The Colts come to McDermitt on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and McDermitt returns the favor on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Independence is a boys only school.
The Northern 1A Regional Tournament will be played in Elko from Feb. 16-18. The state tournament will be in Las Vegas, a week later.
