CARSON CITY — A trio of Battle Mountain High School track and field athletes came away with runner-up finishes in their last meet of their careers at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships last weekend in Carson City.

Blake Dorian was second in the triple jump, with a leap of 40 feet, 10 inches in less than ideal weather conditions. Wind and cold persisted over the two day. Pershing County’s Marcus Nester won the event with a leap of 42-9.75.

Dorian was busy over the weekend, taking part in three more events. He was fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.28 seconds. Incline’s Matt Colby won at 11.70. Just .33 seconds separated second through seventh place. The senior finished sixth in the 200 meters at 25.13. Agassi Prep’s Zeivaun Ned won with a time of 22.73. Dorian also placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 18-4.75.

Senior DJ Potter was looking to win the shot put title in back-to-back years. Potter came up just short, as his best best throw of the event was 43-2. Yerington’s Sam Hammond (46-7.75) won the state title.

Potter added a sixth-place finish in the discus, with a toss of 122-3. Hammond easily outdistanced the field with a throw of 172-1.

Lincoln County’s Dylan Phillips finished second with a throw of 134-11 and Yerington’s Jake Mattice (131-3) was third.

Andrew Cox notched a second-place finish in the high jump as he cleared 5-8. Nester won the event with a mark of 5-10. In addition, Cox was sixth in the 400 meters in a time of 53.53 and eight in the triple jump at 38-9.25..

Sophomore Cameron Thompson placed third in the pole vault, with a height of 11-8. He tied with Pershing County’s Tad Millich at the same 11-6, but Millich was awarded second on fewer misses. Yerington’s Reese Neville won the event with a mark of 14-6. Thompson also finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 48.04.

Regan Knight turned in a fourth-place outing in the triple jump at 40-5 and Fabian Castaneda finished seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 8-6 and the 4x400 relay of Castaneda, Daimean Diaz, DeAndre Powell and Cox were sixth in a time of 3:44.47.

The Battle Mountain boys finished fourth as a team with 58 points. Yerington won the state championship with 118 points and Pershing County was second at 102. Lincoln County (95) was third and White Pine (56) rounded out the top five.

On the girls side Esma Cheno finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 26-11.75. Yerington’s Kassidy Lommori won the title with a throw of 37-8.50 and North Tahoe’s Jordan Briggs (36-0) and Laughlin’s Erin Dillon (27-11.75) were second and third, respectively.

Lauren Avedician was fourth in the discus with a throw of 93-9. Lommori made it a sweep of the throwing events, winning at 133-2. Briggs was second at 116-5. Avedician also placed eight in the shot put at 24-6.75.

Hania Amezcua was seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 6-0 and Lilianna Chavez (28-0.25) and Sammi Wilson (27-9) finished seventh and eighth in the triple jump. In addition, Chavez placed seventh in the long jump at 13-6.75.

Cheyenne Brock was seventh in the high jump, clearing 4-4 and the freshman was eight in the 300-meter hurdles at 1:00.23 and eighth in the long jump at 12-8.75.

Justine Jury finished eighth in the high jump at 4-2 and Sarah Mills was eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 21.28.

The 4x400 relay of Paige Ripley, Brock, Alexa Goddard and Chavez were fifth in a time of 4:56.00. Wilson, Lizzi Sadler, Skotti Torrence and Goddard were fifth in the 4x800 relay at 13:03.98. The 4x100 relay of Jury, Chavez, Wilson and LaRea Tomera were seventh at 57.66.

The Lady Longhorns were seventh in the team standings with 34 points. White Pine claimed the state title with 197 points and North Tahoe was second with 132 points. The Meadows (70), Yerington (59) and Agassi Prep (54) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
