Battle Mountain’s Alan Rangel and Austin Wallock made the long trip to Pahrump last week to finish out the year and compete at the NIAA State Golf Championships at Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump.
Rangel, the only senior for the Longhorns this year, had one of his best tournaments of the year. Rangel was one of a handful of golfers to shoot on in the 70s on the first day of the tournament on Tuesday, May 16. He shot 79 and followed that up with an 89 to finish 10th with a 168.
Wallock carded rounds of 102 and 112 to have a two-day total of 214.
“It was really cool to see Alan play his best golf ever at the state tournament and compete with the best golfers in our league,” said BMHS coach Roger Wallock. “He was our only senior and he was a great leader for our young team. Austin gained valuable experience at a high level of competition and he should be able to use that to build and improve for next year.”
North Tahoe opened up a big lead on the first day and held on to win the team title with a score of 873. Incline and The Meadows each shot 888 to tie for second, but the Highlanders were awarded second on the sixth-man tiebreaker. Lake Mead (899), Needles (903) and Whittell (929) rounded out the team scores.
Incline’s Mitchell Cornell won the individual title for a second consecutive season. Cornell had excellent rounds of 69 and 67 to shoot a 8-under par 136. Yerington’s Griffin Cooper shot 6-under par on the second day to finish second at 138.
White Pine’s Colin Young (148) was third and The Meadows’ Kevin Innthachack (149) and Lake Mead’s Nick Herrero (150) was fifth.
