The Battle Mountain High School softball team was looking to rekindle its magic from a season ago when it went from the No. 4 seed in the regional tournament to a spot in the state championships.
The Lady Longhorns entered the Division III North regional in the same spot this season and just about accomplished the same feat this past weekend in Lovelock.
Battle Mountain took on top-seeded Yerington in the opening round on Friday morning and suffered a 15-0 loss. The Lions scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. Yerington extended its lead to 8-0 in the third inning and closed out the contest with seven runs in the fourth inning to win the game by the 10-run mercy rule.
With its season on the line, Battle Mountain was back on the field later on Friday to take on West Wendover. The Wolverines had defeated the Lady Longhorns in two of the three regular season match-ups.
However, when it counted the most, Battle Mountain bounced back to defeat the Wolverines 10-5 to stay alive in the tournament.
Battle Mountain found itself back on the field on early Saturday morning to take on host Pershing County. The two rivals played five tines prior in the season with the Lady Mustangs winning each contest.
Pershing County got the best of Battle Mountain once again, winning the elimination game 23-5.
The Lady Longhorns actually took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Mustangs countered with 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Pershing County added five runs in the second and three more in the third inning,
The Lady Longhorns notched three runs in the fourth inning.
Battle Mountain finished the season at 15-14 and graduate four seniors in Megan Salazar, Morgan Fischer, Kali Kester and Kylie Sondermann.
