The Battle Mountain High School baseball team entered the season as a young squad with just seniors, and under the direction of two new coaches.
A trip to the state tournament would be accomplished for the squad in a division that featured two of the best teams in the state.
The Longhorns entered the Division III North Regional Championships in Lovelock last weekend as the No. 3 seed. Battle Mountain matched up with host Pershing County in the opening round on Friday morning. The two teams played in the regular season just a couple weeks ago with the Longhorns winning one of the three games.
Battle Mountain was looking to pull off the upset and knock off the Mustangs on their home field. In a contest that was close throughout, Pershing County held on for a 9-7 victory.
The loss dropped the Longhorns into the losers bracket on Friday afternoon against North Tahoe. Battle Mountain kept its season alive with a 15-7 victory.
It did not look good for Battle Mountain through three innings, as North Tahoe built a 4-1 advantage. However, the Longhorns busted the contest open with nine runs in the fourth inning and did not look back. Battle Mountain extended the lead to 14-5 in the fourth inning.
With a state tournament bid on the line, Battle Mountain had to face Pershing County once again. The Mustangs lost to Yerington in the semifinals. The Mustangs notched another 9-7 win to move, as the Longhorns season ended at 17-10.
Battle Mountain graduates two seniors in Calvin Goddard and Edim Tovar.
