Lady Longhorns win final three by forfeit

BMHS travels to Lovelock for regional tourney

The Battle Mountain High School softball team was set to send off its seniors in style this past weekend. However, the Lady Longhorns ran into a slight issue.

Battle Mountain was scheduled to to play Incline in a three-game series, but the Highlanders decided not to make the trip across Nevada and play the games. Incline only had two wins on the season and Battle Mountain had the fourth and final playoff spot locked up.

With the three wins by forfeit, Battle Mountain improved to 10-8 in the Division III North and 14-12 overall.

“It is disappointing because we had everything set to honor our seniors,” said BMHS coach Mike Sondermann. “It leaves us almost two weeks without playing a game before the regional tournament. We came into the weekend needing to work on some things.”

Battle Mountain travels to Lovelock on Friday and Saturday for the Division III North Regional Championships.

The Lady Longhorns will take on Yerington on Friday at 10 a.m. Battle Mountain is looking to capture the same magic from a year ago after reaching the state tournament as the fourth seed from the North.

Pershing County and West Wendover play in the other first-round game at noon. The two winners play on Friday at 4 p.m. and the two first-round losers play at 2 p.m. on Friday. The championship game is set for noon on Saturday.

The top two teams qualify for the state tournament in Reno.
